"I am honored to have continued to represent the amazing team and its wonderful audience, I have spent five years at Manchester United, I am proud of this and my home is Old Trafford," Mata said in a statement on the club's website.
He added that Norwegian coach Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has an exciting vision for the team, which is seeking to improve its level after finishing last season in sixth place.
"Mata is a professional player in the true sense of the word and he is one of the most intelligent players I have worked with," said Solskjaer.
"He is very much aware of what it means to be a player for United and to do his best for this wonderful club."
